John Gable, A Contemporary Realist painter, and muralist, is known for his vivid use of color, light, and detail and for his extraordinary breadth of subject matter. His subjects range from portrait and landscape work to commissions for Americas' Cup crews, historical paintings and murals for corporate clients, and a wide range of subjects involving sport. Born in 1944 in Frankfort, Kentucky, Gable has received awards from The National Academy of Design and the American Watercolor Society, and has shown work in galleries in New York City, Boston, Portland, and internationally. He graduated from The Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California, beginning his career as an automotive designer for many years before leaving for the coast of Maine to take up a career in fine art. Still, many seek him out as a master painter of classic automobiles, with canvas murals in this country and in Europe. Gable has also established an international reputation among sporting art collectors and is known as the Dean of Rowing Painters. His other commissioned subjects cover a broad range in that wide field. As a portraitist, the artist has completed commissions for The Smithsonian Institution, historical figures for Washington DC clients, and many private individuals. In Maine, a portrait of U.S. Senator William Hathaway hangs in the states Capitol Rotunda. Listed in Who's Who in American Art, Gables murals and paintings are found in museums, universities, corporations, and private collections throughout the country. For his personal and gallery work, the artist steadfastly concentrates on capturing the beauty of the Maine landscape, its people, and the inspiration that the state provides as personal reflections. The artist and his wife live in a 200 year old farmhouse overlooking a bay in coastal Maine.
