John “Jack” Gable’s four-decade career as a full-time artist began with a bold leap: leaving behind his role designing Trans-Am Firebirds for General Motors to pursue fine art on the coast of Maine. Born in Frankfort, Kentucky and a graduate of the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, Jack arrived in Kennebunkport, Maine in 1980 with a young family and a deep appreciation for light, atmosphere, and form. He quickly established himself as a contemporary realist painter and muralist whose wide-ranging body of work blends skill and emotion—qualities that have earned him international acclaim. Known for his “command of light, color, and his sense of sporting drama,” Jack has completed large-scale commissions for America’s Cup crews, classic automobile collectors, and museums such as the Smithsonian Institution. His murals appear in both private and corporate collections across the U.S. and Europe, including a 120-foot canvas for a Washington D.C. company and portraits for the U.S. Capitol Rotunda. He views commissioned work as both a challenge and an opportunity: “The skill to paint gets me there, but the experience is the reward.” Jack paints in both watercolor and acrylic, often working in large format from his expansive Woolwich, Maine studio. His subjects include rowers on the Charles, Duesenbergs at Pebble Beach, and foggy Maine coves drawn from memory and life. Still, his painter’s heart remains tied to the landscapes and quiet drama of his adopted home state. “I want that ethereal, joyful feeling… where you're doing something you have a natural ability to do and feel fortunate to make a living doing it.” Jack's work has been exhibited in New York, Boston, and internationally. He is listed in Who’s Who in American Art and has received awards from The National Academy of Design and the American Watercolor Society. He lives in an eighteenth-century Greek Revival farmhouse overlooking Montsweag Bay in midcoast Maine, where he continues to paint, travel, and work alongside his wife, Bobbi. His daughter, Kate Gable Seremeth, is an accomplished yacht interior designer who also partners with her father in his art career.
