Barbara Tavella (1972, La Val, Italy) is an Italian artist living and working in the mountains of Val Badia, Dolomites. In her works, she addresses subjects such as sensuality and seduction, nostalgia and autonomy, primordial force and vulnerability. The painted bodies, mostly women, are set in an undefined landscape of colour and merges with surrounding nature like an iridescent aura. The figures are naked, small and delicate with bizarre and often unnatural faces, reminiscent of the bodies inhabiting the paintings and drawings of MiriamCahn and Marlene Dumas. However, these female characters, seen as hybrid, mystical creatures, defend their own sexuality actively and autonomously, and possess the wild sensuality of their bodies beyond all fantasy and stereotypical representation.
