Originally born in Spartanburg, South Carolina, Laura Clark has called Birmingham, Alabama her home since childhood. She is a proud alumni of Auburn University, where she graduated with honors from their nationally recognized Fine Arts Program with a concentration in painting. It was here that Laura was first introduced to basic hand-building with clay, and was immediately captivated with this new medium and the opportunity it allowed for expressing her artistic vision in three-dimensional form. Laura’s paintings and palette are deeply influenced by the work of Claude Monet and American Impressionist George J. Stengel (1872-1937), a student in Paris at the height of the impressionist movement, and of who she is a descendent. Wide-ranging in subject matter, her paintings share a common romantic color palette she likens to the sun-faded facades and idyllic blue green canals of Venice. It was her study in Italy that solidified a love of art history and aroused a particular fascination with the elaborate draping characteristic of classical sculpture, reflected in the fluid, cloth-like quality of her highly textural three-dimensional forms. Laura describes herself as “deeply introspective-to a fault, and yet equally ebullient and playful.” She considers her body of sculptural work an ongoing study in contrast and a direct reflection of her layered personality. With an emphasis on texture, movement, and balance, her organic forms possess a serene soulfulness. Mrs. Clark was a selected as a participating artist for the prestigious Trinity School’s “Spotlight on Art” event in Atlanta, Georgia, held in January of 2019. Spotlight on Art has been introducing art lovers to new works by some of the Southeast's greatest established and emerging artists since 1982. Garden & Gun magazine recognizes this event as, “one of the art world’s best-kept secrets.” Laura’s work has also been featured in Better Homes & Gardens magazine, The Cottage Journal, Birmingham Magazine, Birmingham Home & Garden, and the hardbound book, Cottage Style - A Palette of White. She was recently featured for her artwork on “Talk of Alabama”, airing on abc’s affiliate television station in Birmingham. Mrs. Clark has been commissioned for numerous residential and commercial projects throughout the Southeast. She particularly embraces the collaborative process between artist, designer and client and finds great joy in the personal relationships formed through these commissions. “I want those I create for to be deeply and intimately connected to their finished piece. Accomplishing that requires a level of transparency between artist and patron that I do not take lightly. I consider it, rather, a high calling and most humbling of invitations.” Prior to beginning her journey as a professional artist, Laura lived for brief stints in Europe, Asia, and in Tanzania, Africa where she taught art classes to school-age children before returning to Birmingham. Her oversees travel and the memories of these experiences continue to inspire her present-day work. She and her husband, Will, have been married for 16 years and raise their two beautiful children a short distance from the home where she grew up.
