Laura Payne (b. 1987, Ottawa) is a visual artist based in Okotoks, Alberta. She holds a BFA from the University of Western Ontario (London, ON) and an MFA from the Mount Royal School of Art at the Maryland Institute College of Art (Baltimore, MD). Payne’s paintings and new media works explore optical illusions and contradictory spatial forms, challenging perceptions of dimensionality and realism. Her work has been exhibited across Canada and internationally, including at Interaccess Electronic Media Arts Center (Toronto), School 33 (Baltimore), Conner Smith (Washington, D.C.), Mendel Art Gallery (Saskatoon), and the National Gallery of Canada (Ottawa), as well as at art fairs including Art Toronto and Plural Montreal. Payne has received support from the Saskatchewan Arts Board and the Ontario Arts Council, was a finalist in the RBC Canadian Painting Competition in 2017, and received a Saskatchewan Foundation for the Arts Award in 2018. Her work is held in public and corporate collections including Global Affairs Canada, Google, RBC, Capital One, Deloitte, and SK Arts. Her practice has been featured in publications including Magazine Ligne, Canadian Art, and RBC Royal Bank publications.
