Martin Webb is a mixed-media artist based in Oakland, CA. In the artist’s own words: “My work comes from thoughts about people, places, and home; about age, time, and timelessness, permanence and impermanence; about movement, migration, and belonging. People and places are depicted in images and objects that combine simple representations, layered abstractions, and plainspoken materials.” Webb works with materials that should suggest permanence—such as metal and cement—yet the painted and drawn forms on each work convey a sense of change and movement. Nondescript figures, houses, animals and trees all evoke a sense of memory and identity without excluding the viewer, but rather encouraging them to forge their own connections with the work. English-born, Webb now resides in Oakland, CA. In addition to painting, Webb also makes prints, sculpture, murals, and other forms of public and commissionable art.
