Sydney Blum (b. 1950, Oneida, NY, USA) is a Canadian-American artist based in Tatamagouche, Nova Scotia. Her multidisciplinary practice translates intangible phenomena, including colour vibrations, light oscillations, seismic energy, and energy flows, into sculptural and installation works that explore movement, transformation, and spatial perception. Using hand-painted elements, metal wire, and suspended components, her compositions balance meticulous precision with dynamic complexity, inviting viewers to experience subtle shifts in colour, light, and spatial relationships. Drawing on her extensive background in both fine art and psychotherapy, Blum’s work reflects a meditative engagement with perception and consciousness, capturing ephemeral phenomena as material form. Blum holds an MFA in Sculpture from the University of Wisconsin–Madison and an MSW in Clinical Social Work from New York University. She taught for sixteen years in the Fine Arts department at The New School/Parsons in New York and practiced as a psychotherapist for over thirty years. Since relocating to Nova Scotia in 2010, she has continued her research into materiality, perception, and colour, receiving multiple creation and presentation grants from Arts Nova Scotia. Her work has been exhibited in cities across North America, including New York, Halifax, Montreal, Toronto, Chicago, Grand Rapids, Miami, and Woodstock. Notable exhibitions include Figures: Sculpture in the Auditorium at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), New York, in 1985, and Just Above Midtown: Changing Spaces at MoMA in 2022 to 2023. Blum’s works are included in museum collections such as the New Museum for Contemporary Art, New York, and the New Jersey State Museum at Trenton. They are also part of public and private collections, including Harper College, Chicago, Illinois, the New School University, New York, and Aurora Retail Group, Montreal. Her work has been featured in publications such as Artforum, Art in America, Sculpture Magazine, The New York Times, CBC, The Washington Post, MOMA Publications, and Contemporanea, among others. In addition to her studio practice, she has contributed as a visiting lecturer and panelist at institutions including Wayne State University, the New School/Parsons, Massachusetts College of Art, and SUNY Purchase.
