Jennifer was born at Chipata (Fort Jameson) in what is now Zambia in southeast Africa. Later her family moved to Lusaka, where she would happily climb mango trees and eat their fruit while perched. At the age of eight, her family moved to South Africa, her mother’s native country, where she completed her secondary schooling. The dramatic landscapes of the Cape, from mountains to oceans, forest to desert, pervaded her consciousness and opened her eyes to nature’s art. Blalack met her current husband, Russell, while visiting her sister in London. They married, and together they traveled to America, where Jennifer became an American citizen. Since then, Blalack has lived in the United States, raised her family with Russell, and worked for many years in the tech industry while living in Silicon Valley. Blalack’s artistic motivation lies deep within so that every work is both a surprise and a revelation to her and potentially to the beholder. This drive has led her to work in fabric, beadwork, lino print, metal, found objects, needlework, netting—and of course, paint on canvas, paper, and wood. Many of her works celebrate the life of those closest to her, including her mother and husband. Blalack memorializes her mother in many of her works, using pieces of her clothes, bits of found objects her mother would have coveted, or images that reflect her memories of her mother. Blalack strives for her work to reach out to people, invigorate their vision, and open them to the empowering value of diversity. She uses any and all media in her expanding palette to embody that vision. Blalack has been exploring textile art in recent works, weaving into her acrylic pieces or creating works completely out of fabric or other textile materials.
