Teresa Roche, a native of Greenville, SC, is a mixed media artist working in acrylic, watercolor, and collage. She received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Dance form Columbia College, Columbia, SC. With a background in dance, event management, and stage production, she approaches each fresh surface as a choreographer orchestrating a dance- beginning. With a blank stage and the pieces and parts in place, gestural movements are tweaked and changed until the work is complete. In building layers of paint and then scratching and sanding back into it, Roche's mixed media works are excavations of sorts- an unearthing of the past, which is then transformed into a new, abstracted story. Artist Statement: The creative process and manipulation of materials fuels my work. Experimentation and combining of unlikely materials is ongoing in my creative practice. My paintings are not planned. They often reflect a period of time or a memory, but my abstract process allows for paint and other making tools to come together in unexpected ways. I often pour high flow acrylics combined with water onto the surface which is a way of going into the painting – the pouring acts as a stain whether it be on paper, wood or canvas. Charcoal, pastels, and conte' are added in both the wet and the dry phase of the painting. Decisions are then made as to what marks are chosen to stay. In the last couple of years, I’ve enjoyed tearing surfaces just to re-connect them with other torn pieces by thread – constantly working the piece as if it is a puzzle.
