My work is about the way visual diagrams present information that describes how something is made or the way it is. I am interested in drawing and collaging multiple layers of information that refer abstractly to maps, architectural drawings and blueprints or patterns and structures found in such things as roller coasters, power lines and fences. I use gouache and collaged paper in a series of layers that are a visual and ideological response to the previous layer to define my pictorial space. For each piece I create a set of rules to follow about the use of a limited palette, a grid format, opacity of paper and whether a piece may include curving lines or maintain a rectilinear structure. Mixed Media Artist Statement – Fall 2022These mixed media works on paper evoke imagined places and invented structures and plans that suggest foundation walls of buildings or a path through a city plan. Like some of my earlier work, they are intensely intricate and incorporate gouache, acrylic, pen, graphite, ink, and color pencil, and have an underlying structure of a loose or meandering grid. Each one utilizes an invented system: the number of lines that are drawn in in a square, a pattern of alternating colors or the flow of the meandrous grid.Paper Sculpture – Fall 2022These works are constructed of hand-painted, encaustic soaked paper that I stitch together to form multiple quirky or similarly shaped components. The individual pieces are then stacked and stitched together to form either free-standing or wall-hung works. The semi-translucency of the paper is created with the use of wax and gives them a sense of weightless instability and fragility. Yet, the wax also lends rigidity and strength to paper, an otherwise flexible and yielding material. They all appear ready to disassemble and fall apart or fall over. I enjoy this apparent contradiction that is created. The process of working with hand stitched paper soaked in wax allows me to explore my ongoing interest in the sense of touch and the way that it embeds itself in, and indelibly records, human involvement in an object’s making.
