"I make figurative paintings that are deeply indebted to the formal elements of geometric abstraction. The images merge intense attention to detail and technical virtuosity with a constant awareness of the flatness of the surface. The result is an interaction between deep illusionistic space and large, flat planes. They are in dialogue with many ideas from the history of art, particularly those of Vermeer, Jo Baer, and David Hockney. The spaces that I choose to depict are ones I know intimately: the apartment I've lived in for seven years, the studio I've had for six, my brother's kitchen, etc. It takes time to really see a place and my long relationships with these locations help me to use extreme detail and abstract elements to communicate the way that these places feel, even more than how they look."
