"Memory Wall" Artist Statement, Fall 2022 A Memory Wall seems to have two very different meanings. One refers to a computer technology term that describes the disparity between the memory chip and the bandwidth. I don’t have the bandwidth for that, nor enough memory in the chip. The other explanation is one that applies to my use in describing a series of paintings. While spending time in Cape Hatteras about ten years ago, I was invited into a neighbor‘s home and the main wall in the living room was covered with framed photographs, objects, bric-a-brac, small paintings and all manner of kitschy memorabilia. When I asked about it, my host told me it was their Memory Wall. Every picture or object had to do with their travels and family, friends, pets, holidays, etc. A travelogue of their lives all displayed on the main wall of the house. Years later, I remembered this wall and thought that it might be interesting to create my own Memory Wall based on my thoughts about painting, nature, wall construction, (stone walls, brick walls, weathered walls, ancient walls), etc. This is a very open-ended painting exercise and one that I could work on for a long time. The first “Memory Wall” painting acts as a visual encyclopedia of shapes, compositions, color juxtapositions, etc. I have always been interested in wall surfaces and how they are constructed. I studied the artisan craft of Venetian Plaster in Italy and have spent years practicing this craft in people’s homes. I take containers of mixed, pigmented plaster into my studio and use it in my work. I have developed a type of fresco painting using Stucco Veneziano. These abstract compositions are done in multiple layers of overlapping colors made of pigmented plaster and marble dust and rubbed with refined beeswax. I then burnish the surface to bring out the stone like quality and seal in the color. My imagery is never far from the real world whether it be man-made or from nature. My BIG LITTLE series has been going on for many years now. Each panel is 12x12 inches and done in pigmented plaster and wax on wooden panels. The small scale allows for experimentation and intuitive playfulness. They become vignettes of my visual memory. All the work in my current show with Carrie Haddad Gallery has been done within this past year. I am very pleased to share it with you.Vincent Pomilio More from the artist: I primarily work in all painting media, on canvas, paper, or wooden panel. For the past ten years my work has been largely abstract, always using the Natural World as my guide. The image evolves through a series of layers, each one rubbed, sanded, or burnished with tools. The image then reveals itself and I intuitively know when to bring it to completion. Some of my work has a strong landscape feeling as in "Between The River and The Sky". I always encourage the viewer to find recognizable shapes and images in my work. "If you see it, it is there". Most of these paintings have an all-over feeling as if these self-organizing systems continue off the picture plane. One shape flows from another, and then another, until there is a pulsating energy of interacting elements. Worlds of refined, chaotic movement are animated by color. DESCRIPTION OF WORKS I usually start with an acrylic base and drawing tools, pencil, wax crayon, ink etc. I also use a Kolcaustico plaster with marble dust and pigments in layers. As it is drying I carve into it and paint into with pigment or water-based paint and start to build up the surface. I do as much carving as painting. Nothing is collaged onto the painting unless I specify collage as part of the material. A lot of the shapes are created with tape and the material is troweled onto the surface. After it is all said and done I rub a refined beeswax into it and burnish the surface to bring up all the detail and seal the surface. It acts as a glaze as well and makes it resistant to moisture. All materials are permanent.
