I photograph in nature, collecting images of trees, grass, dirt, mountains, water, sky, and weather. Environmental peril exists, and as I take pictures, I wonder: am I creating a nature diary or a memorial? My pictures show the natural world, resilient yet fragile. The possibility of finding pristine, unpolluted, undying beauty inspire and encourage me. Within these pictures, there are deeply dark and black areas. These spaces attract close attention to their mysteriousness and splendor, yet elicit scrutiny: What’s in that darkness? My goal is to show more than the pretty landscape or an awe-inspiring and unique land mass that I photographed. The geometric, abstract, structural, and compositional elements of the photograph and each of the components within the landscape convey meaning. How these shapes, colors, and details make you feel and make you think is the point. I want to portray nature sensitively enough to describe its ethereal qualities without relinquishing its verisimilitude. Weather is an essential element in my mostly black and white images about nature: a chilly and wintry December, a deeply frozen snowy season, and summer, a warm nostalgic comfort soon to pass leaving only its memory. I ask myself how the weather feels, and checking daily becomes a fresh reminder signifying the passing of time. Every day risks uncertainty. Yet we can be optimistic about the possibilities even while accepting unpredictability.
