Sean O'Meallie has a background in practical toy conception which becomes apparent when one realizes how they were induced to look at his work. From there, a cerebral and incisive wit takes you someplace you weren't expecting: thought fields both familiar and risky. O'Meallie's touchable painted wood sculptures speak playfully to an innate viewership by using cultural symbols and recombinant ideas. O'Meallie was born and raised in New Orleans and attended the University of New Orleans from 1973-1977 studying under Howard Jones, Tom Young, George Rowan, and Doyle Gertjejansen. He was studio assistant for noted New Orleans artist Ida Kohlmeyer. In the 1980's and 90's, working out of New York and Colorado Springs, O'Meallie invented toy concepts for the international marketplace. During this time he also taught studio art at the University of Colorado in Colorado Springs. O'Meallie's artwork is held in museum, private, and corporate collections and has been featured in traveling exhibits in the U.S. and Europe. His work is included in the highly regarded college design text, Launching the Imagination, written by Mary Stewart and published by McGraw/Hill Higher Education. His "Cowboy Pajamas," a 20 foot tall painted bronze sculpture of a toy-like abstracted cowboy with guns drawn was installed in downtown Denver in 2008. O'Meallie resides and works in Colorado which he points out is merely uphill and upstream from the most enchanted place in the U.S.
