Californian, DONALD DAVIS, impresses art connoisseurs with his handsomely carved stone sculptures. A graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design studying both drawing and sculpture, Davis studied and traveled throughout Italy after attaining his BFA at RISD. Of this period, the artist states: ”My travels through Italy have had a profound impact on my work. Studying ancient architecture and figurative sculpture fostered my respect for principles of structure. I return to Italy frequently to maintain a connectedness there and to work in the stone-carving studios of Cararra. I also continue to be drawn back to explore the high country of the Sierras and these excursions serve as a parallel source of inspiration. My sculptural endeavors reflect this ebb and flow between the two hemispheres. Some works are about nature-the shapes are fluid and organic; other works are architectonic, geometric and based on man’s constructions.” His works are in important private and public collections.
