Dan attended Syracuse University on an art scholarship and graduated with a BFA in painting (magna cum laude). Since 1979 he has painted solely in opaque watercolors (also called gouache). He exhibited his work at Gallery Henoch (1990-1999), Bernarducci-Meisel Gallery (2000-2004) - where he had two one man shows in 2001 and 2003 and Hammer Galleries (2010-2016), all located in New York City. In 2016 Dan started exhibiting at Settlers West Gallery. Dan works on 8-ply museum board. He paints vertically on an easel, the same way oil painters usually tackle their paintings. With his detailed style using gouache requires many weeks of patient application of paint using small watercolor brushes. His paintings are framed behind Plexiglas. A gouache painting will last longer than an oil painting as it will not crack or yellow if properly framed and kept out of direct sunlight. In 2019 Dan won the gold medallion (Best in Show) at the Adirondacks National Exhibition of American Watercolors in Old Forge, NY. It is considered one of the top five watermedia competitions in the country. His work is found in the corporate collections of Winchester Repeating Arms, MONY, Hallmark and Radio Shack. Two museums have added his work to their permanent collections: The University of New Hampshire's Art Museum and The New Britain Museum of American Art. His work is in hundreds of private American collections and also in Germany, England and Switzerland.
