(1939 - Present) Paul Shapiro was born in Boston, MA in 1939. He attended Northeastern University, Boston, MA 1957-58 and School of Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, MA. 1959. Shapiro was steeped in the Abstract Expressionism of the late '60s. When he saw an exhibition of early 20th Century Expressionist painters at the Museum of Modern Art in Paris, it was a life-changing experience for him. He spent the next twenty years perfecting the landscape, creating a deeply personal vision as he went. Shapiro's unique colors became an outlet for his emotional response to Nature. Shapiro's spontaneous gesture and brush strokes are living entities in themselves. In 1982, Shapiro moved to Santa Fe, which resulted in his total commitment to landscape painting. Since then, he has become one of Santa Fe's most notable artists with an expressionistic style. Paul Shapiro seeks to achieve abstract quality using recognizable locations and his imagination. Paul creates his own hues as a mixologist on canvas. His beautiful saturation of colors, are often heightened with primary colors. ''A lot of the abstract work I have been doing has something embedded in it that has elements of the landscape or the figure. It's not specific, but there is still a sense of something there because of the relationships among color, space and form.'' Paul Shapiro*
