(1903 - 1996)A native of Oakland, California, Alice Geneva Kloss attended the University of California at Berkeley, graduating in 1924. Gene Kloss then spent a year studying at the San Francisco School of Fine Arts. Marriage to poet Phillips Kloss in 1925 brought a sojourn in the Southwest, and the couple eventually established a residence in Taos, New Mexico. Though introduced to the etching medium by a professor, Kloss was largely a self-taught printmaker and created over 600 copper-plate etchings, which she printed herself. The mastery of her printmaking earned Gene Kloss the position of Associate of the National Academy of Design in 1950, becoming a full Academician in 1972.*
