As a former fashion designer, Wright is particularly inspired by street style. She often looks to fringe groups for inspiration. Exploring the nooks and crannies of San Francisco consistently provides her with new ideas and fresh design concepts. Wright feels that creating a collection of ceramic art is similar to creating a line of clothing. She starts with a theme and a color palate and then sketches a cohesive group of designs. There must be a few details that are consistent throughout the pieces that create continuity. Equally important is variety, making each piece unique and able to stand on its own. When creating art, Wright has always been very organized. She follows a series of steps. The first is preparing the clay by wedging. The next step is throwing the form on the potter’s wheel. When the piece reaches the “leather hard” state it is ready to trim and then decorate. The thrown form is the canvas on which the hand built details will be applied. Using an extruder and a slab roller Wright crafts perfect coils and thin sheets of clay that are then fitted or draped onto the form. A finished piece takes two to three weeks to become “bone dry” and ready to be bisque fired. This process takes about three days and is followed by glazing and a glaze fire. From start to finish it is a five-week process. Wright is drawn to neutral colors, mainly white, grey and black. For a pop of color she layers white glaze on top of black glaze, creating a variety of blue tones. She often uses metallic (especially gold!) for details. Her signature wheel thrown objects with hand built details require precision and extreme attention to detail. Wright strives to create clean bold art that elevates and highlights the unique styles of modern sub cultures.
