Federico Pietrella was born in Rome in 1973. He lives and works in Berlin. His work develops around the concepts of time, memory, repetition, everyday life, unfolding in various ways within the pictorial space or in site-specific works. “The great monochrome landscapes or the fleeting figures that seem to come out of the walls painted by Federico Pietrella are the upshot of an original combination of painting and photography: a form of expression that the artist has been experimenting with since the end of the ‘90s. Since then his style has shifted towards more material and expressionistic forms, highlighting on one hand his taste for the mimetic transcription of reality, but above all showing a sensitive capacity to make use of time and the continuity of action in the construction of the image and its expression through painting. His works bear all the key characteristics of his artistic development: the relationship with time, the illusionary dimension, the ever original use of simple tools and materials.” (an extract from the catalog of the exhibition Der Spaziergang, MAG Museo Alto Garda, Galleria Civica G. Segantini, Arco. Giovanna Nicoletti, 2011.) His works have been exhibited in many spaces, in Italy and abroad, including: Italian Embassy in Berlin; MART, Rovereto; Villa Romana, Florence; Sandretto Re Rebaudengo Foundation, Turin; American Academy, Rome; Gertrude Contemporary Art Spaces, Melbourne; Stadtgalerie, Kiel; Kunstlerhaus, Graz; ZKM Museum, Karlsruhe; Assab One, Milan; Villa Manin, Passariano di Codroipo; Trento Civic Gallery of Contemporary Art; National Gallery, Prague; National Gallery of Modern Art, Bologna; Adriano Olivetti Foundation, Rome; Pastificio Cerere Foundation, Rome; GNAM, Rome; Municipal Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art, Rome; Guang Dong Museum of Art, Guangzhou; Italian Institute of Culture, London; Del Monte Foundation, Bologna.
