I have been fascinated by fabric and sewing most of my life. Under my Grandmother’s guidance, I learned to quilt when I was in grade school. My younger brother and I hand sewed our first quilt top, a log cabin, when I was 8 years old. I taught myself how to use the sewing machine when I was 12. It was not until I moved to Ajo that I really started quilting. I joined the local quilt group, Ajo Piecemakers, and have been creating quilts ever since. I started by making traditional quilts, but what really inspired me was the annual ‘fabric challenge’ quilt. It required making an original design using a unique fabric selected by the group. It gave me ‘permission’ to use my imagination and ‘think outside the block’. Although I still occasionally make ‘traditional’ quilts, I now primarily make art quilts associated with the desert southwest. I also enjoy using geometric forms and exploring new ideas. I use thread, acrylic paints, beads, buttons and other objects to enhance my designs.
