All my life I have been enchanted by glass, especially by light through glass, reflected light, and the illusion of light in glass. Finally in 1979 I learned to design and build stained glass windows at the Augusta Heritage Mountain Arts and Crafts School in Elkins, West Virginia, followed by an apprenticeship with Libby Frost also in West Virginia. I worked in stained glass off and on for the next 20 years until I discovered fused glass. Every fusing is a surprise, and I love that. Right now, I am mostly working small, which usually means earrings, pendants, and bolo ties. Occasionally I do the odd thing (like cocktail picks or my new fused scrap earrings!). I use Italian glass (Moretti Effetre) and often reverse their dichroic glass to create an illusion of depth, of light in glass. But I also use old opaque lamp glass and "upcycle" it to create a nearly opposite effect, a rich matte surface similar to stone or bone. Both glasses are fascinating, and the options for experimentation are countless. My studio is on the edge of the desert and has been my respite from the stresses of working in humanitarian aid here in the borderlands. I sell my work locally at the Art Under the Arches cooperative gallery and also at the Sonoran Desert Inn gift shop. I also sell online at AjoArtisans.org and on Etsy.com. My business is called Sonoran Fused.
