Artist StatementI put onto canvas what I love, how light enters a space, how color changes from inside to outside. My studio is filled with flower portraits gathered, posed, and painted. I love that quick capture of a flower’s gesture & bouquets with a bit of wildness arranged for dramatic effect. Flowers with an elegance of line, natural rather than cultivated, inspire me to paint from life. BiographyJulia Einstein is from New England and has lived on the coast of Maine for over twenty years, where the light and landscape inspire her work. The artist’s current paintings are a nod to the historical botanicals in a series of line drawings on canvas, beautifully built with paint. Painted surfaces have layers of textures and finishes. Her studio practice includes interior scenes constructed around a look through a window. In these, the selected view is the main character, the way light enters a place, the color of shadows, and the feel of a certain time and day. She also paints still lifes, where flowers sit on a stage with window light, painted with flicks of brushwork over glass-like surfaces, and pale colors emphasize leggy stems, reflections in water, and shadow shapes. These paintings are complemented by a body of work the artist refers to as Flower Power, filled with highly saturated color stories; vivid pinks and oranges, robin’s egg blue, and poison green. Perhaps most compelling is her artist’s garden and continued interest in a series she calls Petite Fleur, in which groupings of small paintings create a “visual flower bed.”
