Diana Tremaine’s dynamic oil paintings are autobiographical, yet simultaneously universal, reflecting a search for meaning in the human experience. They often focus on nature or figures, including family and children at play, with a style that bridges figuration, representation, and still life. Their complex surfaces convey a history by layering and eliminating in a push-pull fashion to reveal what is most essential, evoking collective memories like ghosts of what once was. In Tremaine's 'Navigating Crosscurrents' series, in which a variety of birds are realistically depicted over fields of ethereal color and abstract painterly washes that represent the forces - internal and external, natural and man-made - that surround us every day, we are reminded that life is a balancing act - at times breezy and light, and at other times overwhelming. The oil on canvas paintings speak metaphorically to the delicate balance and fortitude required as we journey on our respective paths.
