Javier Arizmendi-Kalb is a Mexican American painter and architect whose work explores the intersection of landscape, structure, light, and abstraction. Born in Mexico City, he began painting at a young age under the guidance of landscape painters that included his grandfather, Marcos Kalb. His paintings are informed by a strong sense of design, yet they remain deeply painterly, balancing geometry with gesture and emotional resonance.Arizmendi-Kalb’s recent work includes aerially inspired landscapes, luminous interior spaces, and smaller studies that investigate color, composition, and form. Across these bodies of work, he considers the relationship between the built and natural worlds, as well as painting’s unique ability to communicate through surface, scale, and the sensual materiality of paint. He lives in the Bay Area, where he has worked since 1994 as an architect and design director.
