Susan Manchester creates drawings and paintings that explore the delicate boundary between observation and poetic interpretation. Her work is deeply informed by classical training, including studies in Florence with Giorgio Morandi and extended time examining Renaissance drawings in the Uffizi’s Library of Prints and Drawings. These experiences instilled in her a sensitivity to line, gesture, and the expressive power of restraint.Manchester is drawn to the quiet drama of natural forms: the bend of a flower, the structure of a wing, or the way light animates a leaf. Her work seeks what she describes as a “felt presence,” capturing fleeting moments where beauty and strangeness coexist.
