Peter Loftus was born in Washington DC 1948. Well known as an American painterly realist landscape artist who has shown extensively in New York, San Francisco, Santa Cruz, and Monterey. As a bi-coastal artist he has had over 40 one-person shows and exhibited in over 50 group shows across the United States including the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, CA, Newport Art Museum, RI, Arnot Art Museum, NY and Monterey Bay Aquarium Art Gallery, CA. Peter Loftus’s work is collected Internationally. His work has been exhibited and purchased through the U.S. Department Of State’s Art in Embassies Program, in Bagdad Iraq, Athens Greece, and New Delhi India. Peter Loftus’s landscapes have been featured in many publications including the cover and featured article "Capturing A Distinct Light” in American Artist magazine. BiographyPeter Loftus was born in 1948, in Washington DC. He received a BFA in painting from the Maryland Institute College of Art, in 1971. In 1974 Loftus earned an MFA from the University of Pennsylvania. Drawn by the glorious California light, Loftus moved to Santa Cruz in 1975 where he lived and painted until 2020. Loftus taught at both the University of California at Santa Cruz and Cabrillo Community College between 1975 and 2020. During that time, he also sustained a rigorous exhibition schedule, showing regularly in New York at Fischbach Gallery, and in California at San Francisco’s William Sawyer Gallery, Hackett-Freedman Gallery, and Andra Norris Gallery in Burlingame. In addition, Loftus has participated in many group exhibitions. These include American Realism: 20th Century Drawings and Watercolors (and accompanying book), San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, New Horizons in American Realism: Flint Institute of Arts, Flint, MI.
