Stephen Henriques’ new figurative oil paintings are grounded in abstraction and nuanced with the lush color and thick, impasto paint for which he is celebrated. These works are inspired by the avant-garde jazz innovations of Ornette Coleman, Eric Dolphy, John Coltrane, Thelonious Monk, and other experimental American musicians. For Henriques, making art is like following a river or a sound — not knowing where it will take him, yet committing to the journey with an open mind and heart. Education1970 M.F.A.
