Residing in Cincinnati, Ohio, the Midwest has had strong influences on both the style and subject of W. Michael Meyer’s work. While Michael has been trained in the various disciplines of architecture, photography, printmaking, sculpture, and drawing, his preferred technique is painting. It allows him to combine his education in architecture and the fine arts to study rural landscapes with the discerning eye of an architect and the hand of a painter. When creating a painting, Michael approaches the canvas in the reverse of how a painting is typically planned. He addresses the painting’s subject by concentrating on the composition’s negative space first. Meaning, where many artists start by painting the trees, he begins with the sky that surrounds the tree and continues from that point. The result is painterly, bold, and fresh.
