Ayana Ross (b. 1977) is a figurative and portrait artist who combines traditional oil painting methods using figurative realism, with elaborate treatment of patterns and decorative designs to elevate her subjects and provide deeper context into the work. Through her vivid paintings, Ross depicts what she calls the “divine”, everyday moments that tell more about our shared human experience than what is often perceived on the surface. Her work spans past and present, with images and narratives that address an array of social issues including race and identity. Ross seeks to preserve history and celebrate culture, while illuminating her subjects and the message they bring.
