Houston-based artist Neva Mikulicz is widely recognized for detailed, hyper-realistic drawings in Prismacolor pencil and graphite that allude to vintage photography and prints. Some of her works utilize additional media, including LED lights, light projection, sound recordings or artist’s video animation. Mikulicz embraces the unconventional pairing of elements from mass culture along with personal characteristics that derive from her memory and sense of humor. The obsessively complex pencil renderings open compelling dialogue questioning the relationships between ‘mass media’ and the ‘hand-made’, alluding to buoyant evocations of 20th-century America.Neva Mikulicz received her MFA from Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana. Her work has been exhibited in numerous art venues throughout the world including Modern Art Museum, Trujillo, Peru; Shift Studio, Seattle, Washington, and Shanghai Art Museum, Shanghai, China. She was awarded the Mid- America Arts Alliance and National Endowment of the Arts Fellowship Award and her work is included in collections such as the Martin Museum of Art at Baylor University, Waco, Texas; Visual Arts Center Gallery at Fort Hays State University, Hays, Kansas; Emporia State University, Emporia, Kansas and Ball State University, Muncie, Indiana. Mikulicz currently hosts her own YouTube channel, NWM-Art, where she interviews artists, gallerists and curators who share the details of their practice.
