BRENDALONGWORTH Brenda Longworth was born in Indiana. She began her art training in Minnesota under the direction of several painters and bronze workers at Atelier le Sueur and the Minnesota River School of Fine Art. Of her many teachers, she gives credit to Mr. Friedenberg, a vet and sculptor, with teaching her to be critical towards anatomical correctness. His instruction and her talent have made her a master sculptor and painter of animals and humans. Brenda has also studied with artists Foster Willey, Gary Alsum, known for his depictions of children in bronze, and Sandy Scott. Feeling equally at home with both oil paint and bronze, Brenda has the opportunity to create in either medium depending on which she feels is best suited to the subject. Of her sculptural work, she says, “In the beginning process of the sculpture is the part I love the most. I enjoy taking the clay and working around the piece, molding and shaping until it becomes what I have imagined in my mind’s eye. This process is a very satisfying experience. I want each new piece to be better than the last.” Brenda’s preferred subjects are equine, domestic animals, wildlife and children. Sculptures that demonstrate spirit, expression, sparkle and correct anatomy are what she strives to produce in each work of art. She says that her final goal is for the viewer to be compelled to touch the sculpture. Brenda has created a number of commissioned equine portraits for private collections. In 1998, she was awarded for one of her bronze horses at the prestigious American Academy of Women Artists and recently she won first place in sculpture at the Memorial Garden of Colorado State University Veterinary Teaching Hospital. Brenda’s work is represented in fine art galleries throughout the United States.
