Jackieʻs formal education was from the Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles, where she studied design, painting and illustration as well as all the art disciplines. It was there that she first discovered her love for the spontaneity of watercolor.Jackie has worked as a Honolulu artist since 1968, spending most of her career as an art director, graphic designer & illustration with Gib Black Advertising Group; a company she and her husband Gib Black begun in 1972. Her achievements have been recognized through the years both for her watercolor painting as well as design with numerous awards for her commitment to excellence. Included are the premier Pele Awards of the American Advertising Federation of Hawaiʻi, the Ilima Award of IBCA/Hawaiʻi & The National Summit Awards. Now as a full time painter, Jackieʻs paintings have twice received the Bobbie Segler Award for Luminosity in Hawaiʻi Watercolor Society Exhibitions. Aside from watercolor painting, Jackie has illustrated three hard bound books: The Princess Kaʻiulani, by Helen Hoyt & published by Island Heritage. Other book commissions have been Mahealani and the King of Hawaiʻi, published by the author Rianna Williams and Beloved Emma, Queen of Hawaiʻi, published by the Daughters of Hawaiʻi.Although the Macintosh added an exciting new dimension and tool for the artist, Jackie found it was taking her further away from her love for painting and she really missed drawing and painting in the traditional sense. She now enjoys painting full time from her studio overlooking Kāneʻohe Bay - both commissioned pieces, as well as exhibiting in shows and galleries in the islands as well as the U.S Mainland. She has earned her Signature Membership in both the Hawaiʻi Watercolor Society and the Montana Watercolor Society.
