MJ Rigby’s paintings are in the collections of Saint Luke’s Hospital, Arvest Bank, Superior Bowen, the Olathe Indian Creek Library, University of Kansas Hospital, Midwest Transplant Network, the Olathe Downtown Library, Kansas State University, BKD LLP, and private collections nationwide. MJ was born in Toronto, Canada in 1965 to parents with an affinity for art in all forms. As a young boy he spent long hours creating forms by building, deconstructing and drawing. MJ was fortunate enough to be mentored by Gallerist Peter Merwin while studying fine art in France. He received his Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Houston while experimenting with watercolor, ceramic and metal sculpture. He further honed his skills at the University of Colorado where he received his Master of Architecture. He went on to practice architecture for several years, but in the end preferred painting full time. For MJ, art comes as a counterpoint to architecture. The combination of shapes and colors represent a memory of a vista, or more specifically a place and time. The input is a result of recollection, but the subject matter or emotion is up to each viewer. The colors in Rigby’s works combine and intersect with a freedom that is not readily achieved in architecture, where the nuances of each piece reveal themselves over time.
