ANNE HEBEBRAND (German, b.1958- )Painter Anne's paintings are like maps of memories and her ever changing impressions of the world. "My abstract paintings of overlapping geometric shapes rich in texture and color reveal an array of details of delicate transitions and passages. An ongoing exploration of cold wax and oil techniques lead to a tactile surface created not only by adding layers, but also by excavating and unearthing earlier layers of paint. I do not start out with a preconceived image, but a general openness to see what happens.”Born into three generations of German artists, Anne Hebebrand’s paintings are anchored in the tradition of the German Expressionists. Anne’s approach to artmaking is inspired by Paul Klee’s description of drawing as a “line going for a walk” celebrating color, movement, spontaneity and an element of magic. A recipient of the Dana Pond Painting Award, Anne received her BFA from Boston’s School of the Museum of Fine Arts after moving to the United States in 1978. She wrote her thesis on Gabriele Muenter and her connection to Wassily Kadinsky at the University of Alabama in Birmingham, where she received her masters in art history in 1992. After teaching for many years at the college and high school level, Anne moved to Bath, Maine to pursue art full time. Anne Hebebrand’s paintings are indeed beautiful, not just variations on a theme, but more like a studied conversation on painting with one painting giving dialog to another. Asked to comment on authenticity and the relevance of beauty in today’s contemporary art world she quotes Bryan Robertson, a former curator at the Whitechapel Gallery in London, “What I look for in art of any period is imaginative energy, radiance, equilibrium, composure, color, light, vitality, poise, buoyancy, a transcendent ability to soar above life and not be subjugated by it.” “What a tall order to follow.” Anne says modestly. “But, put into the most of simple of terms, I think a successful work of art is one that grabs you when you walk into a room, draws you near and then when you are up close, it will seduce you even more with details that were not visible from far away.” Pamela Ambrose - former Founding and Executive Director of the Loyola University Museum of Art (LUMA) in Chicago and the former director of Rosa Esman Gallery, New York City. Anne currently splits her time between Bath and Todos Santos, a small artist town in Baja California, Mexico, where she interprets the world around her through a process of intuitive exploration of color, technique and composition. Anne's paintings are in many private collections in the United States, Germany and Mexico. She is represented by the Galeria de Todos Santos in Todos Santos, Baja Sur, Mexico and by Pez Gordo in Cabos San Lucas, Mexico. Anne has been featured in several publications including the New York Times and Art New England.
