JEFF MACDONALD (American b. 1952-) Painter Jeff's original career spanned thirty years in the music business before he turned to creating art. He had been an art collector, appreciator and supporter for years. A self-taught artist, he studies and experiments with painting and collage, using interesting combinations of acrylic paint and collected textural material. His compositions range from minimalist to complex, while leaving the source of his inspiration ambiguous. " I had become quite taken with the immeasurable variations of colors and shapes that are possible to conjure in one's lifetime. Combining that with all the emotions whirling about at any given moment seemed to be a place I wanted to go. I try to incorporate various tensions and energies whether simple or complex in my work via movement and concentrated color versus wide open spaces. I have a special appreciation for mid century modern. I can't help but draw comparisons of my love for music with my desire to make art, as cliche' as it might be there are so many elements in both that are soul sustaining and spiritually necessary." His paintings present with beautiful forms and pleasing combinations of color that alternately reach and recede creating a feeling of space and dimension. He has become more masterful at using the placement of the shapes and the hue to create the dimension. There is a modernist sensibility about his work that hints at his influences, but it also feels quite current with an exciting palette and clean execution. Jeff lives and paints full time in Brownville, Maine.
