In the artist's words: "My way of making art has evolved over the years, as I have changed, through life experience and a changing world. Inspired by both organic elements and geometry I play with abstract shapes and ties this with an element of still-life. Those moments of surprise, when a painting turns out in a way that wasn’t expected, is a feeling that I strive for. It’s simple really, my painting always starts with a colour which of course needs to have form and size. My way of composition is intuitive and my paintings are made in a flow directly on to the canvas, no sketching or pre-planning. Maria Lundström was born (b. 1954) in the far north of Sweden, living close to nature, gradually moving south – as a result of art studies in Stockholm (Konstfack University of Arts, Crafts and Design) – and finally ending up in the far south of the country where the artist has a studio in a converted chapel. In recent years, Maria has participated in international shows and made a collaboration with Gorman Clothing (AU) with a collection of homewares, with prints made from her paintings.
