Katsukawa Shuncho, Family name Kichizaemon.Go: Churinsha,4 Kichisado,5 Shien,6 To-shien,7 Yubundo,8 Yushido.9 Biog.: Ukiyo-e printmaker. Lived in Edo. Originally a pupil of Katsukawa Shunsho, then drawn to Torii Kiyonaga's style. (It is said that, having quarreled with Shunsho, he was drawn to Shumman, even changing the writing of shim in his go to follow that of his new mentor.) About 1790 came under the influence of Utamaro. Later in life, gave up printmaking and turned to writing novels. Specialized first in actor prints, then in bijinga done with a subtle sense of light and color. Good compositions of figures in diptychs and triptychs.
