Margaret Aycock grew up in the scenic Catskill Mountains in southeastern New York, and there fell in love with the rich variety of nature. She later moved to the prairies of Tulsa, Oklahoma, and founded a family of fellow artists — her husband and sons paint, sing, compose, and write poetry. She has rooted herself firmly in the natural world around her; she forages for edible and medicinal plants, and keeps her own garden. She expresses her love for the earth in her art, including daily ‘kitchen paintings’ of her own flowers, fruits and vegetables. She states, “My hope is to interpret my surroundings on canvas in a way that brings joy to both myself and my viewer.” Besides her art, Aycock works as a resident artist in the high risk pregnancy and rehab units in her local hospital.Aycock has shared her expertise by teaching local college students to paint in oil for 16 years, and today instructs through Ziegler’s Art Supply, the Gilcrease Museum, and the Arts and Humanities Council in Tulsa. She has also written two books on oil painting, one on still life, and one on plein air painting.Aycock displays her art through her online gallery and has also been shown in brick and mortar galleries nationwide — her work currently hangs in Doran Gallery, Tulsa. In 2012 she exhibited at the Governor’s Gallery, in 2015 she and her husband showed at the Tulsa Artist Coalition Gallery, and a painting of hers represented Oklahoma in the America Paints the Parks traveling exhibition. During the recent pandemic, she donated proceeds from her art to a relief fund. She has been commissioned for pieces including a commemoration of the 1921 race massacre for the Tulsa Artist Coalition Gallery.
