Hannah Ghafary (b. 1997) is a contemporary painter based in Atlanta, Georgia whose work recontextualizes classical art through the lens of modern culture. Hannah's practice draws from the collective cultural conscious of Western society, appropriating elements from advertisements, film, music, and television. By moving subjects of celebrated classical artworks into a contemporary visual space, her work challenges viewers to engage with complex themes of female identity, sexuality, race, and power. Through her work, Hannah dissects the multifaceted feminine experience, allowing for the exploration of both the beauty and challenging realities faced by women. Her work seeks to reclaim the feminine experience, offering a progressive and refreshing perspective on how women are depicted and perceived. Hannah's paintings invites viewers to reconsider the narratives that have shaped their understanding of womanhood, ultimately aiming to empower and resonate while simultaneously confronting the problematic messages women encounter in society. She cites Jenny Saville and Kehinde Wiley as inspirations that are informative to her work as an artist. Hannah received her B.F.A. in Painting from the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) in 2022. Her work has been featured in Ashton Gallery in San Diego, California and GBA Gallery in Brooklyn, New York.
