Jan is a professional Fine Arts Photographer who lives between the U.S. and Amman, Jordan. Over the last 30 years, her work has evolved from featuring highly disciplined, textured images captured using the Sinar 4×5 to highlighting powerful landscapes, portraits and imagery that carries a subtle, fragile beauty. Jan’s work spans from detailing flowers to abstract art and solarized images. Recently, she has used her artwork to present social commentary through mixed media, and to capture the captivating, fertile landscapes of the Jordan-Syria border and its vanishing old houses. Her series on the drying Dead Sea salt formations was nominated for the Prix Pictet in 2008 and was featured at the Arco Biennial Art fair, representing Jordan at the Main Pavillion. For four years she worked as an art consultant with the Ruwwad Arab Foundation for Sustainable Development, teaching photography, esthetic and self expression; culminating in a children’s photography book Stories from Jabal Al Nadeef for the Annah Lindh Child Literature Project. She focused on women’s rights and gender issues, through lectures “Women’s empowerment through art expression”, as well as workshops, where participants would create conceptual art images; providing a tool to advocate change in their communities. Jan’s artwork has been featured across the globe, including in Jordan National Art Gallery and the Bahrain National Museum as well as galleries in Rome, Gottenberg, Sao Paulo, Madrid, Washington DC, London and Rhodes, Greece. She has received countless honors and awards, including first prize in Washington DC’s 37th annual New Concepts held by the Art Directors Club of Metropolitan Washington, and the Photographer’s Forum Award of Excellence. Select pieces of her work have been offered by UNICEF as gifts to Her Majesty Queen Rania Al-Abdullah, Richard Gere, ABC correspondent Cokie Roberts and other senior dignitaries.
