Ningiukulu TeeveeCape Dorset, NunavutPrintmaker Ningiukulu (Ningeokuluk) Teevee is an Inuit writer and visual artist born May 27, 1963 in Cape Dorset. Despite being a self taught artist, Ningiukulu is recognized as one of the Kinngait Co-ops leading artists, who began her career in the 1990s. Being talented both as an author and artist, Ningiukulu uses coloured pencils and ink primarily, but also black fibre-tipped pens, oil sticks and water colour. She is also credited with creating imagery that stem from her memory and knowledge of Inuit legends that connects humor to life in Nunavut. Teevee made her print collection debut in the 45th Cape Dorset Annual Print Collection in 2004. Her drawings have been included in every collection since then. With a vast knowledge of Inuit legends, Teevee adds a whimsical and playful personal touch to her prints that visually capture Inuit oral tradition. Ningiukulu's talents don't stop there. In the fall of 2009, Teevee's first children's book 'Alego' was published by Groundwood Books (A Division of House of Anansi Press). Alego is a story of young girl who goes clam digging with her grandmother for the first time and discovers all the wonders of the seashore along the way. Teevee's book was short-listed for the Governor General's Luteracy Award for children's illustrations. Her signature walruses have been twice featured on the cover of the Inuit Art Quartely in 2009 and again in 2014. Her work can be found in the collections of the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa in Ontario, the Art Gallery of Ontario in Toronto and the Winnipeg Art Gallery in Manitoba.
