Martin Grelle, an accomplished American artist, was born in 1954 in Clifton, Texas, where he continues to live and create on a small ranch with his wife, Joyce. Grelle's deep connection to his home, community, and family serves as a profound inspiration for his work. His two sons, Josh and Jordan, his brothers, Carl and Marvin, and his sister, Mary, along with Joyce’s three sons, Zach, Emitt, and Carl, have all contributed to the rich tapestry of his life and work. Grelle discovered his passion for art at a young age and had the unique opportunity to be mentored by James Boren and Melvin Warren, two professional artists and esteemed members of the Cowboy Artists of America (CAA). Boren's mentorship proved pivotal, as Grelle had his first solo exhibition just a year after graduating high school in 1973. Over the ensuing 44 years, he has staged approximately 30 solo shows, earning numerous regional and national awards for his work.In 1995, Grelle's dream of joining the Cowboy Artists of America was realized, a goal that originated when he first met Boren and Warren. This induction marked the beginning of an illustrious career filled with achievements and accolades. Grelle's notable awards include two Prix de West Purchase Awards, two Nona Jean Hulsey Rumsey Buyers’ Choice Awards, the CA People’s Choice Award, and the CA Ray Swanson Award, among many others. Aside from his individual accolades, Grelle's impact on western art was recognized in 2012 when he received the Legacy Award from The Briscoe Museum. In 2016, the San Dimas Festival of Arts presented him with the Spirit of the West Award. Grelle's work has been included in prestigious exhibitions such as The Masters at the Autry Museum and the Quest for the West at the Eiteljorg Museum.Throughout his career, Grelle has consistently been featured in various publications such as ART OF THE WEST, WESTERN ART COLLECTOR, and SOUTHWEST ART. In 2013, he was honored with a retrospective show at the Gilcrease Museum's Rendezvous Show. Grelle believes that his artistic talent is a divine gift, one that he has a responsibility to use, develop, and share. He has demonstrated this commitment to his community by teaching annual workshops, mentoring aspiring artists, and donating his work to organizations like The Bosque Arts Center in Clifton, Texas. Beyond his artistic contributions, Grelle has also played an essential role in leading and serving art organizations. He twice served on the board of directors for the CAA, acting as President in 2014, and was the Chairman of CAA's 50th Anniversary Events in 2015. He has also worked with The Joe Beeler Foundation, serving on the Board of Directors and as President during 2014-2015. While Grelle is primarily self-taught, he benefited greatly from his mentorship with James Boren and various workshops, notably those with Harvey Johnson and Melvin Warren in 1983, and Bettina Steinke at the Bosque Conservatory. His distinguished body of work is held in esteemed collections such as the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum and the Booth Western Art Museum. Martin Grelle's contributions to the world of art extend beyond his stunning body of work. His dedication to nurturing and fostering the artistic talents of others reflects his belief in sharing and growing the artistic spirit for future generations. As an artist and a man, Grelle strives to live by the examples set by his parents and mentors, a testament to his commitment to both his craft and his community.
