Katie Redfield works in clay during sun and rain, getting to work with her hands as soon as inspiration strikes. Everything in her story is overseen by the sky, and in Montana, the sky allows for lots of breathing room. Redfield says there is room to exist, and therefore her poetry shows horizons. She shows the meeting place of the skyline and fresh air. She is inspired by the lines of the horizon that are tall with dramatic cadence of mountain ranges. Within these landscapes, everything she envisions begins with mountains. Also framed by the sky are the silhouettes, textures, and lines of Aspen trees, native wildflowers, leaves, grasses, branches, and old mining headframes. Redfield’s works become full of these images, balanced with attention to the shape and function of the pot. Her goal is that when you hold a piece she has made, that you feel that there is a thread that connects her home to yours.
