Christine Sutton’s work is original and one of a kind from start to finish. Her bowls and platters are created with her unique plaster mold and hand-finished on the potter's wheel. All her mugs are hand-made and individual in shape and size. Once the clay is hard, Christine hand paints the animals with underglaze on the surface and carves in the animal designs. This process is called Scraffito, with the literal meaning of "to carve". From there, the piece goes through a Bisque process, glazed and then finally fired. Each piece is one of a kind and every animal is unique.Sutton is using the animal forms as both a decorative element and also a form of meditation as she carves them into the clay. In a circle format, there is no beginning or end, and if an animal were removed, it would ruin the balance. She has great reverence for the wild animals and hopes by using them in her art others will appreciate their beauty too.
