Dick Alden is a Maine sculptor whose work explores movement, balance, and harmony. Based in Boothbay Harbor, Dick has spent more than 25 years shaping stone into forms that reflect rhythm and stillness. As sculptor William Zorach once wrote, “Rhythm is a cosmic force… the sense of movement is deeply rooted, it is universal.” This idea resonates deeply with Dick’s approach, as he strives to uncover the natural energy within each piece. Although he studied finance at the University of Vermont and went on to earn an MBA from Northeastern University, an early ceramics class first sparked his interest in art. After years in business and finance, he rediscovered his creative path through woodcarving in the 1990s before finding his true medium in stone. He studied with master carvers Constantine Seferlis and Don Meserve and remains connected to Maine’s stoneworking traditions. Dick describes his sculpture as being about “emotion, rhythm and harmony, peacefulness and love and joy.” Over the years, he has worked in a wide range of stones—including granite, marble, alabaster, serpentine, quartzite, and native Maine stone—each shaped to reveal its inherent movement and character. Since 2009, Dick and his wife, fiber artist and printmaker Priscilla May Alden, have shared Starfish Studio, a creative space where their individual practices unfold side by side. An active member of the Maine Stone Workers Guild, Dick has participated in and helped organize symposia, sharing both his skills and passion for stone carving with the public. He has also served in leadership roles with the Schoodic International Sculpture Symposium, supporting international exchange and contributing to Maine’s growing sculpture trails. For Dick, each stone holds a spirit waiting to be revealed. “To take a piece of stone and create emotion out of it—that’s what I try to do,” he explains. Learn more about Dick Alden on Radio Maine.
