Feminist, expressionist painter Daena Title is best known for her colorful figurative work that mirrors her obsession with modern female icons and the seductive force they wield. Using oil paint, mixed media or acrylics on canvas, CA artist Tile’s ironic commentary explores the mixed messaging women receive on a daily basis and the on-going love/hate relationship they provoke between women, societal standards, and self-esteem. Raised on Long Island, Daena Title received a Bachelor of Arts in Art History and Theatre Studies from Wellesley College, and then lived in Manhattan until 1991 where she worked as an actress and a writer. Title then returned to painting as the best avenue with which to control her artistic message, mine her ongoing fascination/obsession with the relationship between women and society, and indulge her love of color and design. Title currently resides and works in Los Angeles. Her work has been shown in galleries, museums and art fairs since 1997. Recently, Title’s work has been included in the curriculums of several colleges and universities where she has lectured about her recent “Indoctrination in the Dark” series which focuses on the power of narrative in 80’s movies and its influence on popular culture and the treatment of women.
