Kim Hutchison (she/her) is a mixed media artist inspired by the investigation of found objects, salvaged materials and elements of nature. Most often, common objects become focal subject matter. Past works have often been the union of fabrics, the stitched line, ephemera and paint. Within the context of these items there exists a path which acknowledges our shared human existence and the opportunity to embrace impermanence. In most recent works, Hutchison extends focus towards elements of and our relationship to nature. How we define the nature around us and the role of humans in the future of the natural world. Through the medium of cyanotype, the artist collaborates with light attempting to capture the sensitivity of nature. A medium that requires letting go of preconceived expectations and trusting the process. Through layers of pattern, captured images of found objects, elements of nature and light the artist attempts to engage the viewer with a moment of stillness, a place for reflection. These layered broken objects of nature, suspended within abstract environments, are created with the intention to draw attention and challenge our individual definition of nature. As humans it is easy to overlook our interconnectedness with nature, not the one that must be traveled to but the one that lives in our everyday life coexisting around us. They stand as a reminder of how interconnected we are to all of it wherever we exist and the impact we have within our own immediate worlds. Kim Hutchison is an Iowa native and has a B.A. from Grandview College. Kim is an established artist and creative freelancer currently residing in Des Moines, IA with her partner and multiple adopted animals.
