Laurie Fisher is a Maine abstract painter whose subject is color and whose work is rooted in process, intuition, and physical engagement with her materials. Based in Cape Elizabeth, she paints in a light-filled studio where each piece evolves organically—often over many months—without preconceived plans. “It’s the interaction with the materials themselves that inspires me,” she says. “Color is definitely one of my subjects, but it’s also about the physical, visceral experience of working with paint.” Her process is intuitive: the first mark leads to the next, building layers that explore color relationships, and the space and light created within and around them. Guided by an impulse to “quiet the chaos,” Laurie pares back visual noise, distilling her compositions into blocks of color, simple shapes, and organic forms. She hopes to spark “a wordless, visceral experience of beauty and aliveness—a pure, energetic interaction with color and form, space and light.” Laurie embraces uncertainty, trusting her instincts to take risks and push into the unknown. Her background in clinical psychology and her interest in writing, especially the distilled, more abstract language of poetry, inform the sensitivity to abstraction and emotional resonance in her pieces.
