Robena Malicoat grew up in Provincetown within the creative and supportive environment of a family rich with artists. She started painting in her early twenties with the stubborn desire to “figure it out” by herself. Robena is drawn to what we tend to visually take for granted. Although this most often results studio interiors, ranging from 10 x 12 inches to 24 x 36 inches in size, it is not unheard of for something outside to catch her eye. Robena prefers to let this process evolve directly on the canvas. Her primary choice of medium is oil paint. She feels oils are forgiving in that they allow her to “play” with the paints, at times applying, removing, and reapplying it in layers. The colors change, the objects shift, the table tilts, and as a result the process becomes a subtle part of the painting.
