Mike Sullivan is an artist and performer. His work includes sculptural headwear made with materials ranging from natural objects to jewelry and broken mirror. Mike immersed himself in the queer communities in Provincetown and New York City. There he found a passion for portrait and documentary photography. With roots in the theatre, Mike has produced several concerts and collaborations with other singers and musicians as fundraisers for different causes. Ornate and decadent yet composed of elements from the natural world like peacock feathers, flowers, and branches as much as jewels, shards of broken mirror, and found objects, Mike Sullivan's masks, crowns, and headpieces evoke dichotomies, split personalities, clashes of materials, ideas, and ideals. And yet the dramas within them ultimately feel balanced. The work that I create is rooted in an appreciation for the materials, community and the landscape around me. Embodying found objects, natural elements, and artisanal features, I share my discoveries as wearable pieces amongst friends and peers in the community I am apart of. I explore mask making and wearable art pieces because it builds a middle ground between myself and another artist, a friend or a stranger. My photography has documented the evidence of this bridge in natural environments or amongst community gatherings. Working with precious materials like nature and glass, the creations I make are born with a fleeting character, a token of celebration for the present moment. ~ MS
